Sometimes big things come in small packages. And the Eureka Mignon Burr Coffee Grinder is no exception to that rule! Be sure to watch the full Crew Review video below for all the stats and to see this coffee grinder in action!
The first thing that we noticed about the Eureka Mignon was it’s simple design. It’s sleek and has one of the smallest footprints we’ve seen for grinders of a similar caliber. Inside, it boasts 50mm flat steel burrs. The burrs are controlled with a stepless adjustment knob, which is conveniently located on the front of the grinder. A stepless adjustment gives you the ability to really fine tune your grind, great for espresso.
This grinder is great for use as espresso, or even Turkish! That’s right, this grinder can go very very fine. Which is a huge plus for those brewing espresso. That being said, this grinder has trouble going much courser than a standard pour over grind. So if you like to brew both espresso and french press, and are wanting to use the same grinder, the Eureka Mignon won’t work for you. But if you really want to play with the flavors of your espresso, meet your new best friend!
Another great feature that this grinder has is the built in timer. When grinding, you can either use the portafilter trigger or the timer. The choice is truly yours!

In today’s Crew Review Comparison we have two popular grinders for you! Introducing the Rancilio Rocky vs Smart Grinder Pro from Breville. Which is best for you? Which grinder will give you the grind you are searching for? Let’s find out!
The Rancilio Rocky is quite the machine! With 50mm flat stainless steel burrs grinding at an impressive 1725 RPM, this coffee grinder will wow any home barista. The Rancilio Rocky weighs 18 pounds, the motor itself weighs 11 pounds. Basically this grinder can grind! Some like to compare this grinder to other commercial quality grinders, and while it is not designed for a commercial setting it certainly can hold its own. It is operated by a simple on and off switch and the grind setting is adjusted by rotating the bean hopper. What the Rancilio Rocky may lack in bells and whistles it certainly makes up in grind quality. This grinder is an excellent choice for all types of consumer espresso machines!
Next up on our comparison list is the Smart Grinder Pro from Breville. The Smart Grinder pro has 40mm stainless steel conical burrs. The conical burrs allow for a faster intake of beans and as a result can produce a double shot in 17 seconds (compare to 25 seconds with the Rocky). The Smart Grinder Pro is powered by technology. You are able to program the grind time, volumetric grind amount, and the grind setting on the easy to navigate digital display. The Smart Grinder Pro has an adjustable upper burr, which will allow you to compensate for use over time. So grind on you crazy diamond!
The Rocket Espresso Mazzer Coffee Grinder is the grinder of our dreams. In case you haven’t been able to tell, we are in love with our Rocket Espresso machines. From build quality to looks, Rocket makes some excellent espresso machines. So you know when they teamed up with Mazzer to created the Rocket Espresso branded Mazzer Mini Electronic Grinder we got a little giddy.
The Rocker Espresso Mazzer Mini Electronic Grinder Type A is a stepless grinder. It features large 64mm stainless steel flat burrs. This grinder is absolutely on the prosumer side of things. This grinder can do anything from French Press to turkish. However, because it is stepless, it can be very difficult to dial your grinder back in. Sticking with a certain type of preparation is sound advice when using this coffee grinder. You can of course switch from course to fine, just be prepared for a headache in the process!
The hopper that comes with this grinder can hold over a pound of beans, 1.3 pounds to be exact! Because of the size of this hopper, the grinder stands particularly tall–coming in at 18 inches in height. So if you are planning on using this in a kitchen, measure your cabinet height!
Next in the line up from OXO is their grinder, the Barista Brain Grinder to be exact! And speaking of exact, the Barista Brain Grinder has a built in scale!
That’s right folks, the Brain in the Barista Brain is really a microchip that take a lot of the guess work out of your daily brewing. This grinder allows for 3 grinding modes: grams, cups, and portafilter mode. When in grams mode, you set how many grams you would like to be ground, and the Barista Brain Grinder will grind that amount into your collection vessel.
Cups mode is perfect for brewing drip coffee. OXO has preset the grinder to grind 8 grams of coffee per cup, the ideal ratio. You even have a micro adjustment tool on this grinder. So if you like your coffee a little stronger, adjust away! Portafilter mode will grinder until you say stop! But don’t let all that power go to your head
The Barista Brain Grinder from OXO has a nice contemporary look. Black plastic and clad stainless steel will look great on almost any countertop. The grinder itself has 40mm conical stainless steel burrs. We tested the consistency and believe this grinder would be best suited for manual brewing applications. The espresso grind will work for a pressurized system, but you will have a difficult time getting a quality shot off a traditional machine using this grinder.
Something about doing it yourself makes everything taste that much better. Enter hand coffee grinders. Portable, affordable and always up for the challenge, hand grinders can be great for both the novice as well as the espresso aficionado.
Today we are taking a look at the Rhinowares hand coffee grinder. The latest edition to our hand coffee grinder collection. The Rhinowares grinder is beautiful to look at. With a sturdy stainless steel housing, this grinder will last a long time if taken care of.
The burrs on this grinder are ceramic conical burrs. So no need to worry about rusting (Woohoo!) In our testing, we were impressed with how easy it was to adjust the burr settings. This grinder can grind everything from very course to fine. While it can do espresso, we don’t think this would work with every machine. But if you have a pressurized portafilter, this grinder would work very well!
Standing at just 6.75 inches tall and 2.25 inches wide, this grinder is great for travel. It even comes with a handy carrying case for when you are on the go (and still needing coffee!).
We are always say, the cleaner you keep you espresso machine the longer it will last. And we will continue to say so until the end of time. But sometimes cleaning your machine improperly can cause more damage than just leaving it dirty! Who woulda thought?
Case in point, using Grindz in a superautomatic espresso machine. Running Grindz Cleaner through your burr grinder every few weeks will work wonders in terms of keeping your grinder clean and keeping your coffee tasting fresh. It also happens to be all-natural, gluten free and completely food safe. But this is only useful on a stand alone grinder!
If used in a superautomatic, the Grindz will go into the brew unit and expand due to the brewing water. This expansion is really bad for the inside of your superautomatic, and will cause damage.
Today’s Ask Gail is a special one folks. This is a direct question from our YouTube comments! Do you have a burning question for Gail? You can ask her in the comments of our videos and you might get featured on her segment! Cool, huh?
So the question comes from YouTube user dan110024: In regards to adjusting to a finer grind, is the same to be said when dealing with conical burrs? We know that when going finer on a flat burr grinder we need to be running the machine so any beans that might be in between the burrs will be ground out while the burrs get closer together. If that doesn’t happen, the burrs can’t adjust properly leading to a headache when pulling inconsistent shots (and not to mention it isn’t good for the machine!)
So is the same to be said when adjusting grinder burrs of the conical nature? And the answer is yes! It is the same principal, flat or conical or whatever shape you might have
And remember, after you make an adjustment you should be grinding out about a double portafilter worth (or about 18 grams) of coffee to make sure the old grind is out of the shoot! If that doesn’t happen crazy things will happen! Well, actually you won’t properly know if your adjustment is correct, but that can certainly be frustrating!

It’s new. It’s improved. And it wants to grind. Yes I am talking about the new Breville Smart Grinder Pro. The latest addition to the Breville line up. We are really impressed with this machine. Breville has taken all the best features from the past models, added a few extra ones, and created something that both espresso and french press fanatics can love.
The Breville Smart Grinder Pro has 60 settings for really dialing in your grind. We took the Breville Smart Grinder Pro to the finest setting and were very impressed. This grinder even has an adjustable upper burr that is meant to adjust your grind as you use the machine over time. Which extends the life of this grinder (something we can all get behind!).
Breville has thought about every little detail. From the removable bean hopper to the plug that goes into the wall. Yes even the electrical plug has been designed with you in mind. There is a little finger grip that allows for easy unplugging without bending the prongs. I know it’s small, but it is the little things that make the world we live in a better place. But in all seriousness, this is a really cool feature that you wouldn’t even think you needed until you have it! Check it out!
But don’t take my word for it. Watch the video below to see Gail demonstrate all the features and give her two cents. And don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel for new videos with Gail and the team everyday!
When I say Breville you say grinder! Breville! *crickets*
Ok…that isn’t as much fun as I remember. But we all should be really excited! With the recent addition of the Breville Smart Grinder Pro to the Breville Coffee Grinder line up we decided that now is as good a time as ever to compare them all! So may I present to you the Great Breville Coffee Grinder Comparison of 2015!
To start things off we took a look at the entry level grinder, the Breville Dose Control Pro. With an entry level grinder with Pro in the title, how can you really go wrong? We liked this grinder a lot. The finest grind held its own when we compared all three. The body has a little more plastic than the other grinders in this line up, but the build still feels strong.
Next we took a look at the Smart Grinder. This grinder, as well as the Smart Grinder Pro, has a digital screen that is your control center. The display will show you everything from your grind setting to the amount of time remaining on the grind session. All three grinders have attachable portafilter holders (for 58mm, 50mm and 54mm), but the two Smart Grinder models also come with a convenient grounds catcher for those french press or pour over days.
The Smart Grinder Pro is the latest addition to the line up. It is really the next generation of the Smart Grinder. Some of the additional features includes an adjustable top burr which gives you over 60 grind settings for really fine tuning your grind. However, it should be noted that during our testing, we noticed the Smart Grinder Pro has a little trouble grinding when it’s simultaneously set at the finest burr setting and at the finest digital setting. If you adjust the top burr to the finest setting, we suggest you do not take the digital setting all the way down to the very finest grind. This shouldn’t be an issue unless you have your heart set on a very fine grind for Turkish coffee. Even with that hiccup, the grind is still very fine. Gail was impressed.
