Oh yeah, and did we mention the demo bar for coffee tastings and classes?

SCG Westlake Store Update #2

Westlake storeThe soft launch of the SCG Westlake store is coming up fast! In fact, it is only four short days way, as we will be open for business on Tuesday, July 15th.  With the opening coming up soon, we wanted to give to you one last preview at the store before it opens so you can check on our progress.

Since our first visit to the store, Gail and her team have been busy building many of the cabinets, shelving and display cases, and transferring them to them to the store. Most of them are nearly completed, and just need a few finishing touches like doors or steel plates on the ends. These displays and shelving will line the back walls and surround the pillar in the center of the store. We also have wooden boxes to create our coffee marketplace, which will hold an expanded selection of fresh, locally roasted coffee as well as blends from Lavazza.

Gail is also in the process of reworking the existing event bar in the store, where we’ll host all our workshops and demos, to add a nice granite counter top. The front of the bar will be slightly different than the bars in our Bellevue and Portland stores, but we’ll leave that as a surprise for when you come visit. We can’t give our all secrets away! However, you can expect to find our signature metal gear on the red wall behind the bar.

Of course we haven’t forgotten our glorious windows! The window facing the mall will feature a wall of sparkling, rainbow-colored Monin syrup bottles, while there will be shiny machines on display in the street-side windows. If you’re in Seattle next week, you should come explore and play with all our fantastic gear yourself. Our doors open at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday the 15th.  We also have a bunch of great stuff planned for our grand opening on the 19th, check back in next week for more details.

In addition to our slew of giveaways, we’ll also be treating your taste buds. Local roasters like Ristretto and Sterling will be hosting coffee tastings through out the day. Likewise, Bonavita and Krups will be stopping by to teach you how to brew up the perfect cup of coffee or espresso on their gear. SCG Westlake Store Update #1

SCG Westlake StoreWhat’s better than opening one new store this summer? Opening two! In continuation with our plan to take over the world, we are proud to announce that we will be opening a SCG Store in Westlake Center. The store will be our third location in the greater Seattle area and the fourth retail location we’ve opened overall.

The store will be open for business on July 15th, and we will be having a special grand opening celebration on July 19th. In addition to being located in the heart of downtown Seattle, one of our favorite things about this location is all of the windows. The store has a bank of windows that look out onto the mall and there are also several windows that face onto 5th Avenue, allowing you to find us easily from every direction.

As you might have guessed, Gail and Jim (and Scooter!) are once again busily working away in our shop. Yep, they have this build on top of the one they have already been working on for Portland; and you thought you had a jam-packed summer. As busy as we may sound, we are really excited about our grand openings, as they will make for an excellent summer. We also looking forward to seeing a lot of new faces in our stores, and hopefully some old ones too!

We recently made a trip down to the SCG Westlake store to pick out paint colors and determine what kind of fixtures we would like to install. Check out the video below to catch a sneak peek of the space.

SCG Westlake Store Update #1

SCG Portland Store

SCG Portland StoreIn case you haven’t heard, we’re in the midst of another big build. You probably did hear about the one we did last September for Bellevue, and hopefully you’ve even gotten to visit our beautiful store. If not, it’s a great excuse to come visit the greater Seattle area. Of course, we hear attractions like the Space Needle, Pike Place Market, the fantastic scenery and coffee on every corner make good reasons too if anyone needs any further convincing.

Yes, that’s right, we are opening a SCG Portland store in Oregon! This will be our third retail location ever and our first store outside the state of Washington, which is pretty exciting. We’ll leave it up to you to determine if we were kidding last year when we said we were going to take over the world.

The grand opening of our Portland store will be on Saturday, June 28th, so Gail, Jim and their four-legged helper Scooter are busily constructing some of the hardware in our shop. One of the big projects they are currently working on is creating an even bigger event bar than the one we currently have in Bellevue. At 12 feet long, the event bar in Bellevue is already pretty good-sized, but Portland’s is slated to be even bigger – over 16 feet long! In fact, everything in our Portland store is bigger. The store itself is about 1,200 square feet bigger than Bellevue, totaling 3,200 square feet of retail space, making it our biggest store to date.

In addition to the event bar, Gail and Jim are building a variety of fancy display cases for products and preparing the space for the installation of these items. Stay tuned for more information on our grand opening celebration and for updates and videos on how our new Portland store is coming along. In the meantime, check out this video to for a glimpse of Gail’s plans for the store.

SCG Portland Store: Update #1

SCG Classes and Events

Rachel makes mochas for the ladies of Visit Bellevue at one of our SCG classes and events. It’s two weeks into the new year and we’re off to a good start. We’ve recovered from the holidays and are gearing up for the rest of the year (which includes setting up new SCG classes and events). Although the winter months are a busy time for us, that doesn’t mean we don’t have fun too! Some of us got to travel to warmer (and in some cases, colder) climes, while others stayed in town and enjoyed the generally mild weather.

One of the exciting things that those of us who stayed in town got to do was host an event for the lovely ladies on Visit Bellevue Washington’s sales and marketing team. The team got in touch with us because they thought it would be fun to learn how to make a drink or two (and make sure they were fully caffeinated) before heading off to their holiday party. So Rachel fired up our Nuova Simonelli Musica, which happens to be the same type of espresso machine that Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson owns, and showed them how to make peppermint mochas. Afterwards, we enjoyed chatting with the gals for a bit as they explored our store and bought a few goodies for their friends and family.

Of course it wouldn’t be a new year without resolutions – and one of ours is to provide you with more fun classes! This coming year we have a slew of events lined up, including classes on how to make a variety of coffee preps, coffee and tea tastings, maintenance classes (so you can keep all your gear in tip-top shape) and visits from some of our roasters and equipment vendors.

We are excited to get our classes going again, and will be resuming them this month at our Bellevue store. To kick things off we will be hosting two educational/tasting events where you can learn everything there is to know about the featured product and sample it as well!

Blooming Tea Tasting

Saturday, January 18th, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

You may have seen these display teas at parties or heard your friends talk about them. If not, now’s the time to learn! Blooming teas allow you to enjoy both tasty tea and a show, as these hand-sewn balls of tea transform into beautiful flowers when placed in hot water. Best of all, if you are one of the first few guests at the event, you will get a free tea ball to take home that you can use to impress your friends and family.

How to Make Excellent French Press Coffee

Saturday, January 25th, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

We’ll be brewing delicious French press coffee at the top of every hour for this event, and discussing everything you need to know about making perfect French press coffee. From what type of grind to use, to how long to let your coffee steep, we have you covered!

If you are in the area or plan on visiting soon, make sure to keep an eye on our calendar for more classes in the months to come. We would also love to hear your feedback on our classes. Is there something you want to learn about that we haven’t covered? Or a class you’d like to see featured again? Let us know and we’ll do our best to make it happen!

Homage to Brewing: Burgundian’s Coffee Beer Festival

Is it possible? Could two of my favorite beverages, coffee and beer, share the same glass at the same time, in the same reality? String theory aside, Burgudian’s Coffee Beer Fest last weekend accomplished this very feat, and Sam and I were fortunate enough to attend.

With over 20 coffee beers, 5 toddy cocktails and a caffeine-infused food menu to get through, we braced ourselves for the long haul — thankfully, doors opened at 10am.  Here’s a rundown of our favorites from the artfully constructed line-up:

Big Time’s Marzen Oktoberfest aged on Stumptown’s Ethiopia Mordecofe: This medium brown combo was light and refreshing, with hints of brown sugar and citrus notes — a solid standby throughout the afternoon.

Fremont Dark Star Imperial Oatmeal Stout aged on Tony’s Ganesha Espresso: The highest gravity mix at 8% ABV, this beer was big and balanced with a hint of sweetness. It highlighted the espresso’s depth and the stout’s molasses undertones.

Elysian’s Split Shot Coffee Milk Stout with Lighthouse Coffee:  Velvety, dark and mysterious, this stout was extremely smooth and mellow, reminiscent of Guinness.

Straight Bourbon Cold ToddyZoka cold toddy, bourbon, vanilla citrus bitters, orange zest. Smooth toddy spiked with citrus made this cocktail refreshing and dangerously sippable. I’m re-creating this next summer.

Bacon Dipped in Coffee-Infused Chocolate: Um, this kind of speaks for itself. Fan-freakin’-tastic!

It’s Friday, and I wish we could do it all over again tomorrow. Thank you to the Brouwer’s crew and Burgundian for orchestrating a killer event. We just hope that we won’t have to wait a full year to again witness another marriage of beans and hops.

Field Trip: Gail & Kat Take on the SCAA Main Event

No, there weren’t any wrestlers present, but there was a high concentration of coffee related ninjas on the floor. Last week, we were lucky enough to head down to Anaheim, CA, for the Specialty Coffee Association of America’s Main Event, which is a specialty coffee industry educational and trade show that covers everything from coffee growers to roasters to equipment suppliers to mad skilled baristas. This year, it also hosted the United States Barista Championship — with Mike Phillips of Intelligentsia defending and re-securing his title. He’ll be heading out to compete with the rest of the national barista champs from around the world at the SCAE (Specialty Coffee Association of Europe) event this summer in the UK.

But back to the show. We attended a few different lectures, talked with many of our vendors on the trade show floor, watched Midwest Barista Champ Mike Marquard compete in the USBC semi-finals and even headed to a little partay that Intelligentsia, La Marzocco and Espressi (makers of the MyPressi TWIST) were throwing at Intelligentsia’s roastery in L.A. Yes, Grammy got her groove on.

In this video, Gail talks to us about what she learned from the lectures we attended, discusses some new products we saw  and even shares with us her new love for TWIST-inspired cocktails.

Acronyms unite! The United States Barista Championship kicked off today down at the Specialty Coffee Association of America conference in Anaheim, CA. It’ll be going on through the weekend and you can watch it streaming live on their website.

We’ll be heading down to the SCAA event this afternoon and will be there for the next couple of days. Very excited to meet new folks, put faces to names and learn from the variety of lectures and labs we’re attending. We’ll post updates!
