SCG Alderwood Mall Store Update #1

Did you think we were done opening stores for the year? Not so fast, fellow coffee lovers! We’re happy to announce logo_full_color800x800the move of our Lynnwood, WA retail store to the Alderwood Mall. With a grand opening date of October 18th, we’re busily working away on getting it ready for its big debut!

Located just a few miles from our current Lynnwood store, and across the walkway from REI and Nordstrom, we’re super ridiculously excited about this new space!  You can bet that the store will be jam-packed full of amazing coffee and gear, plus an onsite service writer to check in ailing machines for a little TLC. Oh yeah, and did we mention the demo bar for coffee tastings and classes?

Watch below as Gail walks us through the new space and details her vision for displays aplenty!

SCG Westlake Retail Store Tour

Westlake Retail StoreWe’ve completed our second build out of the summer, and now we’re ready to share the fruits of our labor! Gail and crew have done a lot of work in the last three weeks to finish getting everything setup in our new Westlake retail location for our grand opening last week. If you are disappointed you missed it, here is your chance to at least check the store out virtually.

The first thing you’ll notice when you walk into the store is a large gear on the floor. After all, we couldn’t have a store without our signature gear, and in this case we were lucky enough to have room for two of them. In case you are wondering, the other one is a metal gear located behind our demonstration bar. Inside the entrance on the left, we have a table of Saeco espresso machines, followed by Breville and Krups machines on another table.

We also have all of our Monin syrups, we carry over 40 different flavors, displayed in the left front window of the store since it shows through the glass well. Likewise, in case you need future convincing that a store with the word “coffee” in its name sells tea too, we have all of our tea, tea ware and cups sharing the spotlight in the front window. Along the back wall we have every coffee-making accessory you could possibly want. This includes, but is not limited to, French presses, pour overs, tampers, shot glasses, frothing pitchers, hot water kettles and Airscape canisters.

For those of you who want to try out different coffees, our Westlake retail location has its own coffee marketplace. This display features all of our local roasts from the Seattle area, such as Caffe Ladro, Caffe Lusso, Caffe Umbria, Middle Fork Roasters, Velton’s Coffee, Zoka Coffee and more! These coffees also make for great souvenirs or gifts for friends and family back home, as they allow to you share and enjoy one things Seattle is famous for. Let’s not forget all those great windows looking out on to 5th Avenue we keep talking about. In them we have a display of our shiny, single boiler machines, as well as a few others.  Around the center of the store you will find an island of drip coffee makers and single cup makers, and on the right of the store you will find displays for brands like Illy, Nespresso, Jura and Rocket.

If you couldn’t make our grand opening, that doesn’t mean you have missed out on all the fun things happening in the store. We will be offering regular coffee tastings hosted by our local roasters, equipment demonstrations and other classes and workshops. Located in the heart of downtown Seattle, our store is only a Monorail or bus ride away. Better yet, we offer free-home delivery from the store, so you don’t have to worry about hauling larger items back on the bus with you. Come on down and check the store out when you can, the crew in our Westlake retail store is excited as can be to talk coffee with you!

SCG Westlake Store Update #2

Westlake storeThe soft launch of the SCG Westlake store is coming up fast! In fact, it is only four short days way, as we will be open for business on Tuesday, July 15th.  With the opening coming up soon, we wanted to give to you one last preview at the store before it opens so you can check on our progress.

Since our first visit to the store, Gail and her team have been busy building many of the cabinets, shelving and display cases, and transferring them to them to the store. Most of them are nearly completed, and just need a few finishing touches like doors or steel plates on the ends. These displays and shelving will line the back walls and surround the pillar in the center of the store. We also have wooden boxes to create our coffee marketplace, which will hold an expanded selection of fresh, locally roasted coffee as well as blends from Lavazza.

Gail is also in the process of reworking the existing event bar in the store, where we’ll host all our workshops and demos, to add a nice granite counter top. The front of the bar will be slightly different than the bars in our Bellevue and Portland stores, but we’ll leave that as a surprise for when you come visit. We can’t give our all secrets away! However, you can expect to find our signature metal gear on the red wall behind the bar.

Of course we haven’t forgotten our glorious windows! The window facing the mall will feature a wall of sparkling, rainbow-colored Monin syrup bottles, while there will be shiny machines on display in the street-side windows. If you’re in Seattle next week, you should come explore and play with all our fantastic gear yourself. Our doors open at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday the 15th.  We also have a bunch of great stuff planned for our grand opening on the 19th, check back in next week for more details.

SCG Westlake Store Update #2

SCG Portland Retail Store Tour

Portland retail storeAfter six busy weeks of planning and building, our Portland retail store turned out fantastically! With the opening of our third retail store, there is now a place outside the state of Washington where you can come and visit us. Of course, there is also our website, which we must admit is pretty convenient and a great way for those of you who don’t live in the Pacific Northwest to check out and buy coffee gear. However, the advantage of visiting us in person is that you have the ability to play around with different products and the opportunity to attend some fun and interesting classes.

Speaking of those of you who are outside the Pacific Northwest, by now you might be wondering what the new Portland retail store looks like. Well, for starters, we have our shiny, new Rocket Espresso machines by the front door when you walk in. These machines are followed by a display of Technivorms and other drip coffee makers. We also have nearly every flavor of Monin syrup you can imagine setup in the front window, to create a lovely rainbow of goodness. Finally, just around the corner we have displays for well-known brands like Jura, Nespresso, Delonghi, Breville and Saeco.

In addition to espresso and coffee makers, we also have every accessory you need to around out your coffee making experience. For instance, we have hot water kettles, pour overs, scales, tampers, knock boxes and shot glasses. Of course, all of this gear wouldn’t be complete without the coffee itself. As such, we’ve created a “coffee market place” where you can find coffee from a variety of Portland roasters as well as a few Italian brands like Illy and Lavazza.

Besides all of the fantastic gear we have for sale on the floor, you will also find our repair center in the back of the floor. Here we can troubleshoot or fix your beloved machine on the spot or within a couple of days, if it is a more extensive repair.  We can repair most major brands, so if your machine is acting up, bring it on down and we can at least give you a free estimate of what it will cost to get your espresso or coffee maker fixed.

We think that store turned out wonderfully and couldn’t be happier with how the space looks. However, don’t just take our word for it. Take a virtual tour of our Portland retail store yourself in this walkthrough we filmed right before our grand opening. Better yet, come visit us in person the next time you’re in Portland, we’d love to have you!

SCG Westlake Store Update #1

SCG Westlake StoreWhat’s better than opening one new store this summer? Opening two! In continuation with our plan to take over the world, we are proud to announce that we will be opening a SCG Store in Westlake Center. The store will be our third location in the greater Seattle area and the fourth retail location we’ve opened overall.

The store will be open for business on July 15th, and we will be having a special grand opening celebration on July 19th. In addition to being located in the heart of downtown Seattle, one of our favorite things about this location is all of the windows. The store has a bank of windows that look out onto the mall and there are also several windows that face onto 5th Avenue, allowing you to find us easily from every direction.

As you might have guessed, Gail and Jim (and Scooter!) are once again busily working away in our shop. Yep, they have this build on top of the one they have already been working on for Portland; and you thought you had a jam-packed summer. As busy as we may sound, we are really excited about our grand openings, as they will make for an excellent summer. We also looking forward to seeing a lot of new faces in our stores, and hopefully some old ones too!

We recently made a trip down to the SCG Westlake store to pick out paint colors and determine what kind of fixtures we would like to install. Check out the video below to catch a sneak peek of the space.

SCG Westlake Store Update #1

SCG Portland Store

SCG Portland StoreIn case you haven’t heard, we’re in the midst of another big build. You probably did hear about the one we did last September for Bellevue, and hopefully you’ve even gotten to visit our beautiful store. If not, it’s a great excuse to come visit the greater Seattle area. Of course, we hear attractions like the Space Needle, Pike Place Market, the fantastic scenery and coffee on every corner make good reasons too if anyone needs any further convincing.

Yes, that’s right, we are opening a SCG Portland store in Oregon! This will be our third retail location ever and our first store outside the state of Washington, which is pretty exciting. We’ll leave it up to you to determine if we were kidding last year when we said we were going to take over the world.

The grand opening of our Portland store will be on Saturday, June 28th, so Gail, Jim and their four-legged helper Scooter are busily constructing some of the hardware in our shop. One of the big projects they are currently working on is creating an even bigger event bar than the one we currently have in Bellevue. At 12 feet long, the event bar in Bellevue is already pretty good-sized, but Portland’s is slated to be even bigger – over 16 feet long! In fact, everything in our Portland store is bigger. The store itself is about 1,200 square feet bigger than Bellevue, totaling 3,200 square feet of retail space, making it our biggest store to date.

In addition to the event bar, Gail and Jim are building a variety of fancy display cases for products and preparing the space for the installation of these items. Stay tuned for more information on our grand opening celebration and for updates and videos on how our new Portland store is coming along. In the meantime, check out this video to for a glimpse of Gail’s plans for the store.

SCG Portland Store: Update #1

SCAA 2014: Coffee Kids

Coffee KidsAs a retailer of espresso machines, coffee makers, grinders, accessories and of course coffee, we clearly rely heavily on others in the coffee community. Since we would not be where we are today without the hard work of numerous people around the globe, we feel it is only to appropriate for us to do what we can to give back to the people who have helped generate our success. Thus, Seattle Coffee Gear is committed to charitable giving in the coffee communities that need it most. To facilitate this process we donate to Coffee Kids, a non-profit organization that supports coffee-farming communities in Latin America to contribute toward a better quality of coffee by investing in projects and education, food security, health care, capacity building and economic diversification. We have chosen to work with Coffee Kids due to the multi-pronged approach mentioned above and we appreciate the resources and expertise they put into reaching community goals.

At the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) event, we were excited to come across the Coffee Kids booth, and chat with their Development Director, Elisa Kelly, who to learn more about their organization. Elisa explained that Coffee Kids was founded in 1988 by Bill Fishbein, and was originally started as a sponsor a child program, which is what inspired the name “Coffee Kids.” However, after a few years, Fishbein realized that the company’s dollars could go further if they were put into the hands of the community. As a result, he changed the company’s model, and Coffee Kids now focuses on funding projects at the base of these coffee families and communities, and putting the terms of development in their hands. These types of projects help ensure that coffee famers get the correct price for their coffee so they can continue producing quality beans. In addition, the programs provide farmers with the ability to start or expand their own small businesses so they can make a living and put food on the table year round. Clearly, Coffee Kids is doing great things to improve the lives and livelihoods of coffee-farming families. Check out of video to hear more of Elisa’s insights about the company.

For the Love of Coffee

Roasted coffee beans in the shape of the heart on white backgrouValentine’s Day: a holiday to celebrate the one who is near and dear to your heart, the one that is always there when you get up in the morning, the one who motivates you throughout the day and the one who will help keep you from falling asleep when you have a late night project  – coffee!!

What better day than Valentine’s Day to explore your passion for all things coffee? Of course, it might be nice to share your love of coffee with those who are important to you too. If you don’t know where to start or are having a hard time coming up with something to do, here are a couple of tips to help you out.

Bypass the Crowds

One of the things that people dread about Valentine’s Day is having to wait hours to get into their favorite restaurant (yes, it can happen even if you have a reservation). However, if you plan a coffee based date, you can skip the wait and spend the day as you please. Instead of doing dinner, try grabbing breakfast or brunch instead, that way you can start to your day by bonding over a cup of delicious coffee or espresso.

If you’re the type of person who likes to be on the move, you can also get your drinks (and snacks!) to go and take them to your favorite park or location in the city for a private picnic. In fact, many cities and towns have “secret” gardens or hideaways that only those in the know are aware of, which can be dug up with a little online research. Checking one of these places out is a great way to surprise your other half, and you will learn something new about your city.

Another option is to head out to your favorite café for dessert – after all, today is one of the few days where you have an excuse to eat copious amounts of chocolate and nothing goes better with chocolate than coffee. While drinking coffee at night may sound counter intuitive, there are an amazing number of coffee shops that are open late just for these types of occasions. Some cafes even sell drinks that are spiked with vodka or a variety of liquors so you can get your party started.

Brew Up a Heart Throb Latte

If you want to avoid going out all together today, you can always make your coffee or espresso at home. Surprise your sweetie with a latte in bed or brew up some tasty after dinner coffee. If you really want to go all out, try whipping up the “Heart Throb Latte,” a special drink that our Bellevue Store Manager, Rachel, created for Valentine’s Day. The recipe is actually pretty simple and the drink tastes just like a raspberry truffle – yum!

Combine the sauce and syrup together in a cup and then pull the espresso shots directly into the cup and mix well. Add the steamed milk to taste. If you’ve gotten your latte art making skills perfected, now is the chance to show them off by creating a heart-shaped design on top of the drink.

Share the Love

CoffeeLoveSharing is caring and our treat to you is to share our coffee knowledge thorough our  classes. They may even be a good date for fellow coffee and tea aficionados; after all, sometimes the best gifts are free.

Have you always wanted to be able to create beautiful hearts in your lattes but have not been quite sure how to make them? Then make sure to sign up for our Latte Art class in March, where you will learn how to make hearts and other designs. Come next Valentine’s Day, you’ll be able to surprise your sweetie with heart in their morning latte.

Most people use this day to shower their significant others, friends, family and even pets with affection, but don’t forget that machines need love too! After all, your espresso machine makes you tasty espresso drinks day after day, morning, noon and night with nary a complaint (well, it shouldn’t be complaining, and if it is, all the more reason to keep reading). However, just like any other relationship, the one with your espresso machine is improved with maintenance. So why not make a date to take your machine to one of our maintenance classes and give it a little extra TLC? At this event our Service Writer will teach you how to perform routine maintenance on your semi- or superautomatic machine, which will prolong it’s life and improve your espresso. Space is limited in all of these classes so, if you’re interested, make sure to get in touch with us and sign up.

Don’t Forget Your Friends

Doing something nice for someone doesn’t have to be reserved just for significant others. It’s great to also acknowledge those people who you see on a day-to-day basis or have known your whole life but don’t always have the opportunity to thank (or show your appreciation for all that they do for you). So pick up morning or afternoon coffee for your co-workers and neighbors, or even make it for them yourself. If you have friends or family members that live out of town, send them a letter, a gift card or even call them. While all of these things sound simple, just knowing that you care and took the time to think of them will brighten their day.
