Crew Review: Thermos Sipp Travel Cup

You’re on the go, you’ve got things to do, places to go and people to see. You don’t have time to hang out and savor your java over tall tales and mirth. You need something to take your coffee on the road!

We’ve tried several different travel mugs and we dug the Sipp because of its clean design and stainless steel, double-walled interior. It also kept our cold drinks cooler and hot drinks warmer for longer, and that’s the goal of any good mobile cup, right?

It’s not rocket science, but we asked Gail to show off these lovely little numbers, anyway. Check ’em out!

Brewin’ with Brandi: Dulce de Leche Frappe

Queremos los dulcitos!

Brandi is bringin’ on the serious sugar with this blended drink, featuring Monin’s fabulous caramel sauce and butterscotch syrup. If you’re in the market for a cool treat and aren’t counting the calories, this frappe is totally up your alley.

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend well until smooth and frothy!

Compare: Baratza Encore vs. Breville Smart Grinder

In the market for an entry-level coffee grinder? You don’t need to drop a ton o’ loot to pick up a nice model from either Baratza or Breville.

In this video, we compare the features, grind quality and performance of the Encore and the Smart Grinder, then pull shots on the Nuova Simonelli Oscar to test how well they perform.

Cooking with Kaylie: Espresso Float

On my never ending quest to mix espresso into food you might not otherwise add it to, I decided that root beer floats could use a makeover. Enter the Espresso Float. Yeah, I went there!

Ingredients Espresso Float

  • Corn syrup (optional)
  • Chocolate sprinkles (optional)
  • A scoop of vanilla ice cream
  • Shot of espresso (I used Velton’s Twilight Blend)
  • 1-ounce of coffee flavored liqueur
  • Root beer

  • Dip rim of glass in corn syrup and then into a bowl of sprinkles.
  • Add your scoop of vanilla ice cream to the glass.
  • Pour the shot of espresso and the coffee liqueur over the ice cream.
  • Pour in the root beer, going slowly to prevent the drink from bubbling over.

The ingredients for the coated rim are optional, but I highly encourage you to try it. Seriously, it adds a special touch to the drink and is sure to impress.

Okay, now go enjoy that deliciously caffeinated ice cream beverage!

Compare: Hand Grinder vs. Electric Grinder

Does true grit always win in the end? Will a little extra elbow grease make all the difference in your espresso extraction? We put Gail through a serious test to find out!

Watch as she grinds up coffee at an espresso grind using the Hario Mini Mill Slim and the Baratza Virtuoso. Serious exercise was had — and possibly a few international conventions transgressed.

Compare: Nespresso Capsule Espresso Machines

For ease of use, cleanliness and convenience, Nespresso‘s patented capsule espresso machines are a hard act to follow. Sure, they’re never going to give you the God shot, but if you’re considering one, that’s probably not that important to you. What they will do is give you consistently good espresso and offer you a variety of blends to choose from.

While they have several different styles of machines, one thing remains the same: The brewing functionality. Other than that, each model has different features you can choose from. Watch as Gail guides us through their currently available suite of machines and talks to us about how they compare.

Brewin’ with Brandi: Strawberry Guava Frozen Mojito

If we leave Brandi alone long enough, she always goes to a place of sweetness and light … and booze! But since we know our way around a mojito — no questions asked — we were very excited by her delicious take on this lovely cocktail. Incorporating a trio of Monin syrups and fresh strawberries, we think you’ll follow suit!

Combine everything into the blender and blend well. Enjoy!

Compare: Rancilio Silvia with PID vs. Nuova Simonelli Oscar

While these two machines certainly have some core functional differences, they are often compared by folks because once you retrofit the Silvia with a PID, its price tag is very similar to that of the Nuova Simonelli Oscar. So, is one better than the other? As usual, it’s all a matter of perspective.

Watch Gail discuss the features and functionality of these machines, then demonstrate how they perform in terms of drink quality. She also talks about why you might choose one over the other, so if you’re on the fence regarding these two models, this comparison video was made with you in mind. Cherish it.

Happy Labor Day!

Today in the US we celebrate all of our hard work by toasting the final days of summer with a cool beverage and a barbecue! We recommend incorporating java into that beverage and your barbecue marinade/sauce because, you know, everything tastes better with coffee.

Have a fun and safe holiday!
