Crew Review: Technivorm K741

Look, we know you’ve been coveting the oft-touted smooth cup of coffee from the Technivorm drip coffee makers, but your cupboards just don’t allow that kind of height, right? Well now you’re in luck with the K741, featuring the awesome cup quality of its larger compatriots, streamlined functionality and a bit shorter overall. Short is beautiful, baby!

Watch Gail show it off in this demonstration video. Then we brew up a batch of Velton’s Twilight Blend — of course.

The newer units KBGT, etc. apparently have a pre-infusion mode built in. What are your collective opinions on that vs some of the other tweaks (flipping the switch in the basket, stirring half-way thru the cycle, etc.)

Also, what are your feelings on paper filters vs SwissGold (or generic goldtone).

Thanks!!!! keep up the good work, i’ll keep saving my pennies for one of these gadgets!

I haven’t seen a different pre-infusion functionality. What they do have is a mid-brew interrupt so that you don’t have to flip those switches, but as far as the actual brewing is concerned, it appears to function like other models. I’ll double-check though.

Filters are super subjective; some folks love the paper, others the metal. I think it depends on how ‘bright’ you like your coffee — the metal filters allow for more coffee oils to remain in the end brew, so tend to have a higher acidity / brightness flavor. Gail prefers paper, others of us prefer metal. I don’t think one is better than the other, just different cups, etc.

thanks for the reply, and let me know what you find. I personally like the taste of the “high-fiber” coffee, but tire of the extra work of the french press (I’m considering an Espro though). I’d like to get back to set-it-and-forget-it coffee making.

    Keep up the good work.
