Crew Review: Breville YouBrew Coffee Maker

There are a variety of schools of thought around coffee preparation: On this, we can all agree. While there are folks that are die hard espresso enthusiasts, there are others that are never going to give up their daily pot of drip coffee. It is for the latter that Breville has released their new grind and brew coffee maker, which has the unique functionality of being able to brew different size pots or single cups at a time. With most coffee makers, you determine your overall volume by how much water you put into the reservoir — all of it’s going to be used in the brew. With the YouBrew, however, you can keep the reservoir full and select different sizes, so it functions a little more closely to a superautomatic espresso machine (unfortunately, without kicking the coffee to the side afterward!).

Watch as Gail tries out the YouBrew for the first time — taking us through features, functionality and brewing a pot of coffee. As of this writing, the YouBrew is slated to launch around the end of October, 2011.

I believe they are planning this for this year but we don’t have an ETA from them quite yet.

Thanks for the review and the video. I am planning on getting this as well as the Breville tea maker. We currently have a Keurig coffee maker that is incredibly unreliable. I would rather have 2 devices that work, than rolling the dice everytime I want a hot beverage.

Those are both great choices — especially the tea maker! Sometimes the combo units just aren’t worth the 50% effectiveness of either operation ;)

would like to read a review from someone that is using the breville coffeemaker. the reviews i have read are from people who intend to purchase… the grinding process very loud….

It’s not any louder than other grinders I’ve used (either in coffee makers or stand alone) … but it *is* a grinder, so it will definitely make some noise in the morning :)

I’m looking to purchase the Breville YouBrew, but I hear the coffee comes out weak. Is this true?

I think it’s true for some people, but others are quite satisfied with it. The grinder could be better and they’re experimenting right now with adding either grinder adjustments or dosing adjustments in order to address this … on future models.

I recd the you brew as a present. We love the unit. However, after 2 weeks we found a strong “mechanical” taste. The odor appears to smell and taste like the illuminated screen. We were very impressed with breville’s customer service. They immediately replaced the unit. After 2 days, the new unit developed the same strong odor/tatse. Not drinkable. Has anyone found this issue? We are disappointed as we love every other feature….

      Hi Kevin -

Thanks for sharing this; we haven’t noticed it in our demo model here … perhaps other owners will pipe in if they have experienced the same issue.

Can you use regular ground coffee in the YouBrew?

Yes – you can do pre-ground coffee in it as well; there is an option to select that vs. the grind and brew.

    We love the you brew!
-have not had any sPoiled tasteS from the filter. The YOUbrew also allows paper filters to be used.
    -the grinder works great.
-the strong setting Tastes great. Have not tried the intense Flavor setting yet.
    -mild is great for evenings
-for decaf PREFERENCEs simpLy place in filter and choose to mill instead of grInd
    - no need to pre-heat carafe. The temperature is great. Most people Keep their houses at a reAsonable temperature. The YOubrew heats The water very well.
-we chose the stainless steel carafe because I have broken the two glass carafes from our previous coffee maker While cleaning.
-we had a mill & brew Before the youbrew and there is no comparison in flavor and we have not changed the beans that we have been using.
-the single cup servings are great.
-the grinder is not Loud and works much better than oUr previous grinder. The Mill & brew we had prior was loud in comparison
-we love that the youbrew stores Beans and that they are stored SEPARATE from the filter.
    -worth every penny
    -makes the house smell wonderful
-love all the options and settings
