New! Breville Non-Pressurized Portafilter Basket Upgrade

When we started carrying the Breville espresso machines a few months ago, arguably the most common complaint we heard was that the pressurized filter basket easily clogged and was difficult to clean. We looked into the construction to see if there was something we could change about that, but decided to go with a upgrade altogether by creating a unique, non-pressurized porftafilter basket specifically designed to fit Brevilles!

In this video, Gail talks to us about the baskets and pulls us a shot to show us how they perform. If you have a Breville, this is a highly recommended upgrade to your setup. You will need to be more in tune with your grind and tamp than if you’re using the pressurized baskets, however, but you’ll have the opportunity to¬† significantly improve your shot.

You could try sourcing a La Pavoni basket yourself and modifying it; we don’t ship outside of the US right now.

I understand you don’t ship to Canada. I can get a La Pavoni 51mm basket from a store up here. How hard is the modification needed to fit the Breville portafilter? I love your site/store.

You just need to be able to hammer down the edges on the side; the stock basket will be curved on the edge, but you’ll need to flatten it — pretty easy to do, really, just ensuring that the the side are flush so that they’ll seal with the brew head.

I also live in Canada and couldnt get your non pressurized basket, so i look it up and found that the Krups works as well. Only problem is I end up with some particle of coffee in my cup. I do have a burr grinder, and tried different settings, its either too small and my breville cant pull the shot or i have some particle. The brewing time looks about right (around 27-28 sec).
Is it because im using the krups filter? Should i look into buying a different filter like the La Pavoni basket?

Could be that the filter wholes are affecting that … not sure, I haven’t tested the Krups model.

It’s the best date we have, so we’re working with it :) We had a delay in sourcing the baskets and then in the manufacturing/adaptation of them, so hopefully they’ll come in this month.

I also hope these baskets are available soon as I am hoping to improve the taste of the espresso my Breville BES820XL makes. On a related note regarding tampers, can someone tell me if it’s okay to use a 49mm base tamper vs a 51mm tamper base for the replacement (or original) filter basket? I ass-u-me that it’s preferable to use a tamper that fits as closely as possible to the diameter of one’s filter basket. Thanks.

      Hi Dave!

We should have these this in this week, we just got word that the manufacturing is complete. You can use a smaller tamper, but as close to the diameter is really your best bet for an even puck, so if you can get the larger 51mm tamper, that would be ideal.

Thank you Kat. I hope you get the 51mm flat base for the Reg Barber tampers (I really like the 8 Ball one that’s on sale) at the same time as you get these baskets.

Well, Reg orders take awhile to come through, so not sure if they will come in tandem, but we should have a good supply of the baskets for awhile.

Hey, I want to use my 860 with a bottomless filter. Is there any filter for the 860xl which has a greater holed are?

I mean the 860 only has this small single shot filter and i’d love to have the one shipped with the bes900xl. Do you think these are compatible?

They’re different size brew heads, so not compatible. You can get single walled baskets for the 860 now from Breville, if you got an older version that did not include this.

I have The hario mss-1 hand grinder. Do you think this will produce a good enough grind to use with the non-pressurized basket (for the breville machines)?

I have used it in espresso prep, so you should be fine to try it out.
